Chapter 6

Sitting on a bleacher, Winter couldn’t believe that Ma had guilted her—her, the anomaly in the small town, a non-sports fan—into coming to a home Steadfast-LaFollette Friday night football game against Tomahawk High. She sat with Ma and Bruno, lifelong fans, on one side, and Kaitlyn on the other. Clay, of course, was down on the field pacing, gesturing, and talking with his players.

The last time she’d seen him, she’d kissed him. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Even if Clay Dixon was a great guy, her family history didn’t lead to happy endings. She would get hurt and, worse, might hurt him too. She tried not to stare at him but couldn’t stop herself from seeking him out. She noted that Kaitlyn’s gaze kept slipping to the team bench where Adam sat tensely, on the team but not playing tonight.

In her down coat and lined boots, Winter had hand-warmers in her pockets and a blanket wrapped around her and still, she shivered. At halftime the game was still scoreless. Winter sipped hot cocoa from a thermos as she endured the brutal second half, which was, according to Ma, a “head-knocker.” Yet neither team scored. Winter felt the tension all around her. Wisconsinites took football very seriously. Clay paced and paced, obviously feeling the pressure.

The game went into double-overtime. Then it happened. Clay’s quarterback kept the ball and ran around the left side. Winter found herself on her feet, screaming with the rest of the crowd.

Racing to score, Clay’s quarterback got hit over and over. Winter felt each blow. Why didn’t he go down? Yet, he stayed on his feet and headed to the end zone. At the one-yard line Tomahawk defenders hit the kid so hard that half the crowd winced and groaned. But somehow the quarterback managed to stay on his feet and cross the line and make the score. Then he fell to the ground, obviously injured.

“Oh, no!” Kaitlyn exclaimed.

Winter felt herself breathing hard as if she’d run the yards and taken each blow—yes, she’d been hit over and over again this fall. She watched the battered quarterback, watching, waiting for him to get up. How badly was he hurt?

A hubbub ensued as the game was called a win for Steadfast-LaFollette. The stands erupted with cheers and even the defeated side appeared to realize that they’d witnessed an exceptional game. Dr. Doug, who’d come to the game with his wife, Dr. Kirsi, went straight down on the field to the injured player. Winter sighed with relief. Now she could go home.

“Can you wait with me?” Kaitlyn yelled into Winter’s ear. “I have to wait for my brother, and he’ll be a while.”

Winter must have looked unhappy and chilled.

“We can wait inside near the locker room,” Kaitlyn said.

And what could Winter say? Besides, she wanted to congratulate Clay on the win. That was the thing to do, right? She resisted any further analysis of why she wanted to see Clay.

After inching their way through the loud, milling crowd, Kaitlyn and Winter sat at old desks in the hallway outside the locker room.
